Accelerate, City of Light Vie in Oaklawn Handicap

Apr 14— Hronis Racing’s undefeated Accelerate, last seen winning the Santa Anita Handicap at a mile-and-a-quarter in March will make his third start of the year in the $750,000 Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap. Hall of Fame jockey, Victor Espinoza, who has ridden him in his previous two wins, will again have the mount on the talented son of Lookin at Lucky.

Of the five horses set to oppose the likely favorite, City of Light is given the best shot to do so. City of Light made his only start of the year in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita, winning easily against a quality field of sprinters that included Roy H and Catalina Cruiser. He will need to go an extra two furlongs in the Oaklawn Park Handicap, his first attempt over two turns.

Also in the field is Hawaakom, who improved to be second in the Essex Handicap here after dull efforts in the Louisiana Stakes at the Fair Grounds and the Razorback Handicap.

Untrapped, who was badly beaten in the New Orleans Handicap at 9 furlongs in his last start at the Fairgrounds, is likely to find the Oaklawn surface more to his liking. He hasn’t won on the Oaklawn track, but did finish third twice from three starts.

Hedge Fund and Hence round out a competitive field.
